Szilágyi Áron erőnléti edzés

How many strength and conditioning sessions do you have a week?

We usually have 3-4 such sessions a week, 1.5-2 hours long each from start to finish. These are dedicated conditioning sessions, which are separate from fencing sessions.

Do you have a dedicated fitness coach?

I’ve been working with my fitness coach, Áron Kiss, since 2015, and he leads and supervises my whole physical preparation. At the beginning, he was working with the Hungarian national team, but for the past year, he has been with my fencing club at Vasas.

What do you like the most and the least about strength and conditioning training?

I love seeing the improvement in myself and how I move. It’s a great feeling when you can tell after a 3-4-week-long training program just how much faster, stronger, more agile or more athletic you’ve become. What I can struggle with is the monotony of it, but with Áron, sessions do not only get progressively more difficult. There are always new elements incorporated, so training rarely gets boring.

What are your strengths and weaknesses in this type of training?

I see myself as a hard-working athlete, so I don’t really have problems with perseverance and I do all the work required by this sport. What I don’t always pay attention to is not to overdo training but to reserve my energy.

What tools do you use if any (e.g. kettlebell, power band, etc.)?

Áron believes in a little bit of everything, so we use loads of tools. He always has TRX suspension trainers, mini bands, all sorts of resistance bands, recoil belts, agility ladders and mini hurdles in his bag, but we also use unstable tools, kettlebells, medicine balls and Olympic weight sets.

What do you do to prevent injuries?

During conditioning sessions, we gradually prepare muscles for the work ahead. Warm-up takes 20 minutes and we spend roughly the same amount of time on cool-down. In addition, if I suffer from an acute issue, I’m always in good hands with our masseur, József Bodnár, and our physiotherapists help a lot, too.

Have you ever had a serious injury or operation? If yes, how long did it take for you to get back in shape?

When I was 17, a bone spur was removed from my right knee. Besides that, I haven’t had any serious surgeries. I count myself lucky as I’ve evaded serious injuries so far. Minor problems, of course, occur all the time, but these can usually be treated without disrupting my competition schedule.

How important do you think is physical fitness for fencers nowadays and before? Has this changed a lot? How dominant is it in fencing?

I’ve been competing in the adult division since 2007. In my experience, physical fitness did matter a lot even then. Top fencers stood out in fitness, too. This hasn’t changed. These days, however, strength and conditioning training doesn’t help you stay ahead of the competition that much, but rather to endure the continuous workload and competitions, up to even the age of 40. I could list several fencers who still compete at the top of the sport in the eighth or ninth quinquennium, because they haven’t skipped fitness training during their career.

2015 óta dolgozom együtt Kiss Áron erőnléti edzővel, aki a teljes erőnléti felkészülésemet irányítja, felügyeli.

Hogyan próbálsz figyelni a sérülések megelőzésére?

Mit gondolsz a fizikai kondíció fontosságáról a mai vívásban a korábbiakhoz képest? Sokat változott? Milyen domináns ez manapság?

2007 óta versenyzem a felnőtt mezőnyben.
